BUSTER'S NEW HOME

Buster.new.jpg
Buster came exactly as advertised by FoF: "friendly, outgoing, affectionate, fearless," happy and joyful -- and aptly named. He adapted quickly to his new home & family. Our previous cat, Bean, was a 19-year old 4 lbs female (also a rescue cat, adopted by my sister in Bamako, Mali, in west Africa), so we had some additional cat-proofing to do as Buster is a 10-month old 8.5 lbs male with a world still to explore and conquer -- "fearless". (When we got her at age 16, Bean's attitude was more "been there, done that".)

He covered every inch of the house the first weekend but now he's settled into some favorite spots. Our 6-foot wide kitchen window is his wide-screen, hi-def, channel to watch the antics of chipmunks, squirrels, and birds, so we are no more likely to break him of jumping onto the kitchen counter than my wife is to cure me of watching football or boxing. But he is almost cured of jumping on the dinner table -- he takes his revenge from an unused dining chair, hiding under the tablecloth with paws awaiting a careless hand or knee.

He's broken nothing and, as he learned his terrain over the week, he now almost never tips anything over. (We followed him around that first weekend moving, rearranging, or removing the vulnerable.) He also likes the floor-level living room windows with a view of the trees immediately behind the house. Like Bean, he loves to curl-up on the ottoman, preferably against my wife's feet wrapped in a wool throw, in the sunroom where we watch TV and read. He'll also stare out the sunroom's sliding glass doors to the deck, watching avian trespassers.

With his long legs and, when flexed, his surprisingly large paws this lanky feline has room to grow. And he loves to play. This strapping youth quickly finished off Bean's old toys and then a few of his new ones. Like Bean, he loves those mini-fishing poles with elastic string and an artificial mouse or bird and a bell at the end. He catches enough "big air" chasing those to be the envy of any snow- or skateboarder. A 20-inch scratching post has been replaced by a 30" one. My wife ordered a 5-foot tall "Cat Club House" to replace the two 5-foot bookshelves in her office that were his initial window perch (see photos). And then there's the mesh-enclosed 6-foot long "Kittywalk" with a 5-foot tall "penthouse" so he can enjoy the deck in good weather as, unlike old Bean, brawny Buster is eager to try the 5-foot leap from the deck into the wild woods of deer, skunks, and turkeys.

Despite his high-energy at night he is content to climb in bed and snuggle between us, sleeping through the night. Of course if you move your feet too much under the covers ... well, how's he to know there's not some wild beast crawling beneath the comforter that he should attend to? We were worried how he'd adapt to being home alone Monday thru Friday, but he seems quite content. This weekend he's quieter, taking cat-naps during the day, so the first weekend's high activity level was probably just a normal reaction to a new environment.

CELESTE

celeste2.jpgceleste1.jpg

She's not just any tabby kitten. With her striking, silver-spotted coat and gorgeous face, Celeste could be a jazz singer or a movie star. Instead, she's choosen to be a lap cat cuddling with her human. A bit feisty when she's not snoozing, Celeste would be happiest with an adult family. She may or may not be best friends with another animal. Celeste is a typical tabby female - she is beautiful, amusing and affectionate on the one hand, but on the other, she can really argue a point when she wants to.

OK, so maybe she could have been a lawyer by day, and a jazz singer by night.

GOLDIE - Adopted February, 2006

goldie2.jpg

We received this heartwarming email from "Goldie's" new family:

WE ABSOLUTELY LOVE HER!!!!!!

The first night I brought her home, she found comfort in my teddy bear "Spencer", so I thought it appropriate to change her name to "Spencer".

It only took a couple of days for Spencer and my other cat Juice to become friends. They get along great and they are constantly trying to learn new things about one another. They have become quite the pair and they share everything.

Spencer has made herself right at home and is very affectionate with everyone. She is quite the jumper and loves to explore every spot in the house.

Spencer loves to purr (loudly), lay in our laps and just can't enough of us petting and rubbing her. She is very lovable and we just adore her! Spencer is now part of our family and will never have to worry about being without love, care or a permanent home ever again.

Thank you again Friends of Feline's!!

UNCLE JOE

ujdrawer2.jpg

One night last winter a call came in from Stan, a caregiver to a feral colony of 10 cats in his backyard. It was a colony we were very familiar with, having worked for over a year trapping feral adults, getting them spayed or neutered and returning them to Stan’s care. We had also removed and socialized many kittens - having kittens was once a favorite pastime at Stan’s place – there was even a female with the well-earned name of “Fertile Myrtle”.

Stan said a new cat had shown up a few months before, a young, handsome tomcat he christened Uncle Joe. Stan had seen the cat limping a little, but now he was dragging a hind leg and not eating well.

The weather forecast predicted a snowstorm, and in fact, it had already started snowing – it was best, it seemed, to pack up a trap and just go get the injured cat.

Once at the vet’s, Uncle Joe was sedated while still in the trap - they found a hole the diameter of a nickel going completely through his foot – the wound was flushed out, he was neutered and eartipped, and then I got to take him home for a week of antibiotics before his release back into Stan’s yard.

Three days into his recovery, Uncle Joe stepped up to the front of his cage, placed his front paws squarely on my shoulders, and gave me a nice, slow blink.

Just like that, Uncle Joe became the newest member of the Friends of Felines foster program, and quickly became one of my favorites. He was adopted by Susan a short time later – and here’s how life turned out for this once homeless cat -

MY NEW FAMILY MEMBER ~ UNCLE JOE:

It was a happy coincidence when my co-worker saw a sign about cat adoptions at a pet store near my office. She knew that I was looking to adopt another cat since my previous pet had died a couple of months before. So I drove over after work – just to look – and met my future adopted Uncle Joe.

I was looking for a cat that would like being an ‘only child’ with no competition for attention or food. Janine’s description of Uncle Joe as a ‘goofball’ immediately caught my interest, as my pets have always been a little quirky. So the choice was made.

After a period of several days spent under my bed, Uncle Joe ventured out and has exponentially become an integral part of my life. I come home after work and he greets me at the door. We watch TV on the couch together; he curls up against my leg, throws the occasional glance in my direction and lets out a quiet ‘meow’ with a slow blink of his eyes. This is one of the surprises, he is incredibly vocal now. Initially silent, he is continually meowing and chirping at me. A total character, Uncle Joe’s favorite past-times include stalking me and jumping out unexpectedly, like the Kato character in the Peter Sellers’ pink panther movies.

He has an alter-ego (which I have named Fang) who races around the apartment, skewing rugs and furniture. Usually at about 3 in the morning.

Uncle Joe continues to introduce himself to me. I can only wait for what the future brings.

Sunny

sunnyinside200.jpg
It’s hard to describe what Sunny was like – we’d been feeding him in Greenwich all this winter but he’d probably been outside for longer then that. He wasn’t neutered and rarely showed himself to us – we thought he was probably feral.

When we finally trapped him, he was filthy and covered with mats and ticks, but he wasn’t feral at all – just a little afraid and very, very tired. He slept away his first week inside.

What a beautiful, sweet cat he turned out to be! All he wants is to be picked up and loved.

Sunny doesn’t worry about mats anymore because his new family argues over who gets to brush him next!
